What are working conditions like at University of Alabama at Birmingham?
Pros
The benefits are some of the best in the area.
Cons
UAB has a decaying infrastructure and not enough money to replace/repair what they have effectively. They have a huge amount of empty space and make research departments pay enormous fees to keep the increasingly problematic space. This has created a cramped environment where departments are reducing their footprints to the point where there is not enough space for proper research to be done to increase the grant funding they base their dollars per square foot metrics. If COVID had not been so impactful, this may have not been as problematic but to implement such huge changes during a pandemic is fairly shortsighted.
Advice to Management
Quit charging so much for nearly nonfunctional space.
