What is paid time off like at University of Maryland?

Pros

UMD has great benefits beyond health insurance, including lots of paid holidays and generous leave (especially for exempt positions), FSA, tuition remission for employees anywhere in the USM system and at UMD for employee's immediate family members, and more. In my department, people are knowledgeable, competent, and very pleasant to work with, and the work is never boring. There's also a union for both non-exempt and exempt employees. Employee safety is taken seriously.

Cons

Because it's a public university, funds can be tight for raises and supplies, and there is no career ladder or step process--you pretty much have to hope someone leaves to get a promotion. Also, the bureaucracy can slow things down.

Advice to Management

Find a way to allow for step promotions if you want to stop the revolving door.
