I sensed a very anti-military tone in there question, and a lack of knowledge about either the Coast Guard or Navy. I replied "there is common perception that today's military operates in a strictly hierarchical manner, but my success in the Coast Guard was a result of forming strong teams outside of organizational chains of command. It involved identification and engagement of a variety of stakeholders. I was able to unite a diverse team around a common goal of increased operational readiness, and the result was a better than 50% reduction in mission limiting casualties. This leadership style worked well in my subsequent positions in the commercial sector."

The recruiter later confirmed a concern on their part about military experience not being a good fit for their organization.
