"If a customer calls very frantically explaining that their

  laptop is no longer working due to water damage, and the company does not cover the damages in the warranty given, what would you say to them?"

Easy, open a ticket and explain the issue will be handled by the onsite technician. However a spare computer is available for temporarily use while another computer is prepared. If there is data on the hard drive there is no promise of recovery however the hard drive will be dried out and tested. Any data can be recovered if the drive is functional. If you did not sign that you are solely responsible for the care of the machine and financially responsible for any problems then its not your problem!
