Application

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at A.T. Kearney (London, England (UK)) in March 2016.

Interview

Two, one-hour long interviews, back-to-back. Both began with a fit interview followed by a case. The fit interview was intense and the interviewer drilled down a lot.

'Tell me about a time when you did xxx'.

Followed by:

'How did you plan that process?'
'What were you thinking at the beginning of that process about the structure of the task/project?' 'Why did you decide to do it that way and not another way?'
'And at x stage, what was your thought process?'
'What were your weaknesses/limitations in that project?'
'What did you learn from it?'

If preparing stories for your fit, try to leave enough time to not only tell your story using the Context, Action, Result format, but to look at your CV stories from different angles so are prepared for the level of drilling.

The good news is, there are only two or three of these in the time so make sure the stories show a range of skills and why those relate to consulting.

Interview Questions

  • All the usual - why ATK/why consulting questions, plus things like:

What do you think a day in the life of a consultant is like? How would you fit into that space?

(Was looking for an understanding of the corporate culture, the mindset of a consultant, the ability to be credible in front of a client etc)

How do you think you'd cope with the corporate environment/workload/frustrations of a client perhaps deciding not to implement your work?

There were two cases - not very structured compared to what I'd practised as they had come from the interviewers' own experience. One was a banking case about implementing a new technology and doing a cost/benefit analysis.

The second was a retail distribution case for a consumer goods company - looking at where in a particular country products were made, the customer segments (large v small stores/online), and trying to discern how to prioritise customers based on a number of factors you could choose - I looked at size of stores, volume of orders, time to pay, distribution costs - distance from main factory and time to travel, length/quality of relationships among other things.   Answer Question

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at A.T. Kearney in September 2014.

    Interview

I was shortlisted in the campus recruitment process. Had two rounds of interviews. Behavioral was pretty deep dive but the interviewer did not go in any particular sequence. Sometimes referred to my resume and other times picked points from my answers. But he definitely had areas in his mind and was trying to assess my personality based on my responses.

The second interview was case based and had a simple guesstimate question about a developed country.

    Interview Questions

    • I was expected to know the population of a country. I thought that it should have been a non-issue but we spent 5 minutes discussing this!!   Answer Question

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at A.T. Kearney.

    Interview

Had 1st round MBA interview with a senior consultant at the firm. I already knew him since I had networked heavily with the firm so I had already built a rapport previously. Usually they ask fit questions first but he called me the night before and said he wanted to focus on the case as he thought I would already fit in. The case was a shipping case which he had just finished working on - he admitted it was a high level of difficulty and it WAS - I got stuck even though my thought process was clear and structured - even though we knew each other that didn't matter - standards were high and the case was tough.

The 1st round test is basically like the GMAT. Similar questions, and even some were identical. If you can do easy and medium difficulty GMAT questions you will be fine for this test. Time is pressured but most people finish including myself.

    Interview Questions

    • The case was about shipping immonium nitrate from Ukraine to Ghana. He took about 10min to explain the facts, unlike what all the resources tell you. He didnt let me take notes as he wanted me to listen to the whole case problem. The case was about shipping costs, and operations - whether suppliers could forward integrate to compete with us etc. I hadnt practiced any similar cases to this - quite a unique one.   Answer Question

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at A.T. Kearney in November 2011.

    Interview

Recruiter contacted me initially and was very helpful and considerate of my time. My interaction with people at the firm was a 180. Both interviewers were late. And there was no type of warm reception at the office. It seemed like they didn't care if I was there/interested or not.

    Interview

1st round interview is 1 to t interview asking about my backgound, my previous experience and my career aspirations. Then followed by a case interview. This is just a very typical consulting interview.

The 2nd round was an assessment centre which was fun. there was a group assignment where 6 students were asked to solve a case with simulated client interviews. Then we were asked given a case to produce a presentation (individual) to partners. Then last part was about wirting an email to resolve a difficult client situation

    Interview Questions

    Negotiation

    The HR was fairy rigid
