    Senior Engineering Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Seattle, WA

    Negative Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in January 2017.

    Interview

It took 2 months for the entire process starting phone screen to interview. Very slow in scheduling. Onsite interview was good. Got to meet 6 people and enjoyed the conversation. Even though i felt that i did extremely well, I didn't get the offer and the worst part is that there is no feedback. It felt like waste of time for everyone.

    Area Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in San Diego, CA
    No Offer
    Positive Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (San Diego, CA).

    Interview

I submitted my resume on an employment website my school has. I received an email about a week later inviting me to apply on Amazon.com, I didn't recieve a phone interview and about a week later I recieve an email inviting me to an interview. I set up the date and they paid for a hotel room.
Going into my interview I was under the assumption I would be interviewing at a Fulfillment center, but I was interviewed in a hotel and by two different area managers. The first interview went well it was a case study and then behavioral questions, it felt more like a conversation than an interview. My second interviewer was negative and kept talking about how this is the most stressful and difficult job ever he was short and he only asked behavioral questions. I asked questions after the interview it lasted about an hour and a half.

    Interview Questions

    • Tell me about a time you had conflict in a group.
Tell me about a time you failed.
Tell me about a time you persuaded a group to take your idea when they already had an idea made up.

      Case study:
Two employees carpool together Jennifer and Tim, they each arrive 30 minutes late one day. When they recieve their checks Jennifer who is in your team notices she was not paid the same as Tim, as Tim was paid the 30 minutes he was late and Jennifer was not. Jennifer tells you that Tim was paid the 30 minutes. What is your course of action? Do you talk to Bruce(Tim's manager)? What would you say to Bruce?
Let's say Bruce gives you a sad story about how Tim is having a hard with his personal life and that's all he tells you. What would you say to Bruce? What would you say to Jennifer?
If Jennifer is still not happy would you talk to your manager or HR.

    Senior Marketing Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Seattle, WA
    Declined Offer
    Neutral Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in November 2016.

    Interview

All I can say is wow.... the grass isn't always greener. I was contacted via LinkedIn by an AWS recruiter for the exact position I currently hold. I had one 25 min call with someone from the team. The next day I had an invite to fly to Seattle and a written question except use. The travel department was great to work with. Easily booked a flight and the put me up in the Fairmont downtown the night before the interview day.
The day started at 11:30am and I was to meet with 5 people (3 in person, 2 on the phone). After the first interview I was picked up by a "lunch buddy" and take to lunch off site. After meeting these two people I started to sense a pattern and it was confirmed at the end of the day.... all of them lacked passion for their job. They worked for Amazon and that was enough for them. The "set" questions they have to ask are ridiculous. It must be mandated because they spend more time typing notes then actually learning about the person.
Another thing I started to notice was all 3 in persons had 2002 PC laptops!! We are talking old! I asked the first guy if they had a mac option and he say "yeah I think so" the second guy I asked said "oh they are very equipment frugal here" uh you think!? So I have to work with inferior equipment so the company can save money!?
Since the position I was interviewing for was the exact role I have done for the past 2 years in the same industry i had I a lot of people in common with the interviewers. We would go off on tangents about war stories and other common experiences we had. The interviewers would get nervous that they didn't have enough notes and would cut the conversation short to get back to "the questions"
2 business days later I was contacted with an offer. The offer would have had to be 2 times larger then it was for me to take the job.

    Reasons for Declining

The "vibe" of the team I meet with lacked passion and vision. They where collecting a paycheck. The people I meet in Seattle were all dead in the eyes! Not a place I wanted to work no matter what names on the building.

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Amazon (New York, NY).

    Interview

The hiring manager seemed programmed to speak in Amazon terminology throughout the duration of the interview process. When I asked questions around their brand perception and culture, the interviewer quickly deflected to statistics of Amazon's penetration in the e-commerce marketplace avoiding the topic.
