Project Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Phoenix, AZ
No Offer
Neutral Experience
Difficult Interview

Application

I applied online. I interviewed at American Airlines (Phoenix, AZ) in May 2016.

Interview

It was very strange, as I have applied for several jobs via LInkedIn. American Airlines called me for a prescreen interview and began asking me very detailed questions about the specific position, but because I had applied for several I didnt really understand which job he was referring. The HR person was only able to just give me the job title again ("Project Manager") which made answer the specific questions about my fit very difficult. If you apply for jobs at American Airlines, keep a print out of the job descriptions and titles handy!

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took a week. I interviewed at American Airlines (Tempe, AZ) in May 2015.

    Interview

American Airlines has a unique interview process in the area I applied. I am not sure all departments do it this way, but IT Security did. All candidates are rallied for a 3-4 hour session. Each person goes several rounds of questions in various competencies, project management, leadership etc.
The advantage to this method is that each round is assessed by the hiring team and the candidates know that day whether they have the position or not PLUS if they candidates did not make it, the hiring team provides valuable feedback. A lot of companies shy away from providing feedback and that can be very frustrating. I personally give them a 10 for being authentic in process!

    Negotiation

There was no room for negotiation in my case. I would still recommend to stick with your expectation .I was offered close & I accepted due to the team & company. I'm glad I did that.

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 4+ months. I interviewed at American Airlines (Dallas, TX) in January 2014.

    Interview

    Initial offer for phone screening
First phone screening (30 min - HR)
    Positive feedback
Told by recruiter that there was a hiring freeze due to time of year and really did not expect much more
    About three weeks later...
Second phone screening (longer 1 hour - Director and Manager)
    Positive feedback
Told by recruiter that AA had some corporate hiring difficulty...
    Again, approximately three weeks later...
    Request for on-site (Dallas) interview
On-site interview: (I paid for this as I was there for business/personal travel, but I would recommend that others ask the company to pay): Interview was approximately 2-3 hours with a start of professional and technical PM questions, followed by team PM questions -- excellent interview, very professional, team was definitely feeling the strain of rapid flux without a solid PM
On-site job acceptance -- WARNING -- this is very different from most on-site acceptance
The hiring mangers at AA, team I was to manage at AA, and recruiting agency all made the offer and I accepted BUT...
there was another hiring freeze, I think this is may be a union or Dallas area issue as I have other colleagues at AA with completely different experiences
