Community Representative Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Denver, CO
No Offer
Negative Experience
Difficult Interview

Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at American Cancer Society (Denver, CO).

Interview

The interview was long - it lasted a full hour. The questions were abstract and many of them were situational questions that seemed completely unrelated to the position. Many of the questions were also open-ended, prompting you to give an examples of how you respond to different instances. It was extremely vague and some of the questions were unclear.

I applied online. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at American Cancer Society (Lafayette, IN) in October 2011.

    Interview

I had a phone interview first. I was then interviewed one on one with an Associate Director. That was pleasant. Lastly, I had an interview with three directors and was made to make a presentation. Overall, it was a standard process. The presentation was fine and they said I went above and beyond what they typically saw.

    • Recall a scenario where you had to intervene because a volunteer was unruly or argumentative. How did you handle this situation?   Answer Question

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at American Cancer Society (Grand Rapids, MI) in September 2011.

    Interview

Very friendly interview process done in a timely manner. The first stage was a phone interview to review skills to make sure they matched the position. Following that I had an in person interview followed by a second in person interview with an additional staff member. The overall process took a month, but the organization kept in contact throughout the process. Very open staff and they answered all of the questions I had prepared and cared to know what my interests were outside of the work environment.

    Interview Questions

    • They did ask you to prepare a three minute presentation, very conversational, on how you would talk to community members about Relay For Life.   1 Answer

    Interview

2 interview dates, interviewed with direct boss on phone first then met with her and her boss in person. Dress in your Sunday best as the managers do as well. Talk about organization skills, event planning, speaking engagements, trade shows, communication skills, working on the fly, marketing skills. I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at American Cancer Society (Jacksonville, FL) in May 2008.

Single interview. Very easy, simple questions like why I wanted to work there, did I have a connection to cancer, event planning experience, etc.

    Interview Questions

    • Do you have a personal connection to cancer? (this can be emotional, but it is important for this company and they like to hire people who do have connections because they are often more driven.)   Answer Question

    Negotiation

    No negotiation was available.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 5+ months. I interviewed at American Cancer Society (Jacksonville, FL) in April 2012.

    Interview

Applied online in January. Did not hear anything for 4 months. Got a call to say I was one of the 4 candidates chosen to have f2f. No phone screen, straight to interview with very little lead time. Interviewed with director and senior rep (1 hour each). Great emphasis on the mission and that you do this job for 'feeling good about what you do' translation, we don't pay well. Salary is low and hours are long. With role expectations, this should pay better.

    Interview Questions

    • Standard questions. Tell me about a time when... None were anything I had not heard before.   Answer Question

    Reasons for Declining

Salary too low. I literally could not live off what they were offering. No room for negotiation.
