Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Avalara (Overland Park, KS).

Interview

They do a quick 15-minute interview asking regular questions on classes, inheritance and such. Then, if you pass, they'll ask you to come for a job interview that lasts 4 hours. Some of the interviewers ask questions that require a lot of thought and the interviewer is pressuring you for an answer. Thinks like solve a fibonacci sequence or some other math problem is fair game to them during an interview. It can be stressful at times. It seems like a great place if you are a genious and can solve math sequences on the spot.

    Interview

This was for a front-end focused position.

Applied directly online, received a response a few days after, and did a recruiter phone screen about 8 days after initial application. Recruiter phone screen mostly went over the responsibilities for this job and covered any questions I might have about the company and team. Recruiter was friendly, discussed WFH flexibility, room for growth, work/life balance, etc. For some reason though, she was really stressing how cool the tiki bar was (which, idk, I didn't care too much for lol)

I asked her about the full process and it was supposed to be:
    1. start with the recruiter phone screen.
    2. Next would be a coding screen (take home project).
    3. 1 hr remote technical (with a bit of behavioral) interview. If that goes well then
    4. onsite interview with 4-5 people, 45-60 mins each, possibly with a lunch.

The first phone screen went smoothly and the discussion about salary was really straightforward and they seemed to pay higher than what other places were offering. But...

I was supposed to be given a coding challenge. I had no access to the links and requested access. There was no follow-up from the recruiter for 3ish days, so I pinged them again. After about a week, I finally got the coding challenge. I was never told during that time, that they were working on the access issue.

By then, once I got the coding challenge, I was a bit discouraged from doing it. The lack of communication during that period was very bizarre to me and I told them that I would withdraw from the application process at that time. The Glassdoor reviews also scared me away a bit.

I wouldn't say I had a very negative experience, but there just wasn't a big enough push factor from my current position to make me continue the process given the lack of communication on Avalara's end.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Avalara (Durham, NC) in July 2019.

    Interview

The first interview was about 20 minutes long with one of the corporate recruiters, and it turned me off real fast. He repeatedly referred to me as a "Junior", although I never once refer to myself that way. With two years of industry experience and a job that promoted me beyond the title of "Junior", I felt that was incredibly presumptive and rude, regardless of how they might classify someone with my experience-level at their company. It speaks of corporate formulas to determine worth. The recruiter seemed to think I should be grateful they'd consider someone of my experience level.

The recruiter was also not well versed on the team's technical stack. Simply said it was "PHP and Postgres", but couldn't verify what the Frontend tech was (yes, I know PHP can be used for Frontend technology, but the recruiter didn't know enough to confirm or deny this).

The last and final offense was how difficult it was to reschedule the technical interview. It took two full business days before I got a response back from the recruiter confirming they'd received my message to reschedule. At this point we were less than 24 hours from the original interview time. I had to follow up twice before I got that response. When the recruiter finally did respond, he rescheduled the interview for a time the following day without asking me if I was available during that time. I was not.

After all of this, I determined Avalara would not be a good cultural fit so I withdrew myself from the interview process.
