      Senior Financial Analyst Interview

      Jan 31, 2012
      Anonymous employee
      Richmond, VA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (Richmond, VA) in Jan 2012

      Interview

I was initially contacted by a Capital One recruiter via LinkedIn. We had a brief (approximately 30 minutes) phone call to discuss my background. After the phone interview, I was instructed to complete three online assessments: (1) Untimed Personality Test; (2) Timed Verbal Reasoning Test; (3) Timed Quantitative Reasoning Test. Upon passing the online assessments, I was invited to their office in Richmond to do an onsite interview (4 back to back interviews - two case studies and two behavioral interviews). Overall, I did not think that the interviews were terribly difficult. Just be sure that you have clear and concise answers for explaining your experience. Also, if you do not have much experience with case studies, there are a lot of resources regarding what to expect and how to prepare. **ONLINE ASSESSMENTS** The Capital One career site provides more than enough practice tests via links to SHL. The personality test was a basic psychometric evaluation - essentially, they want to know that you are a high performer and that you can work well in a collaborative group environment. Teamwork is VERY important. While the timed math and verbal tests are not difficult - you should take the time to practice before taking the actual tests. The Capital One career site directs you to free practice tests through SHL and some other companies. I suppose the best way to explain the tests would be like a mini GMAT. The math test had 18 questions using various types of charts with data. The idea is to be able to determine the important data in an efficient manner. I kept double checking my answers and only finished 16 out of the 18 but passed with no problems. The verbal test had you read a passage and then answer questions based on the information that you just read. **ONSITE INTERVIEWS** Ultimately, the case studies are the deciding factor. Be sure to pay close attention - and if you do not quite understand what the interviewer is looking for, don't be afraid to ask for direction. My case studies started with open ended questions and ultimately ended with some type of break-even analysis (e.g., at what point would your sales result in $0 profit/loss, should Capital One cancel a program that costs $X, etc.). The interviewers are very friendly. You are going to start out with very little or no data - so don't be afraid to ask questions in order to get the information needed to draw a conclusion. My behavioral interviews were pretty standard (tell me about your background, why do you want to work here, tell me about a time when ...., etc.).

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (McLean, VA) in Oct 2024

      Interview

Applied through a recruiter. The recruiter was great and awesome to work with and helped speed the process up. Power Day was an awful experience. I had four rounds of interviews back to back, two behavioral and two case studies. All the interviewers did not put in any effort at all on getting to know me and my background, just went right into "tell me about a time when..." questions. A couple of my interviewers didn't even know which role I was interviewing for when I asked questions on what I'd be doing day-to-day when we had a bit of time left. Overall, it seems like very textbook interviews instead of trying to get to know the candidate and see if they are a good fit in the actual team they'd be in.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (Frisco, TX) in Sep 2024

      Interview

Applied online, screening interview with HR, online personality assessment, interviewed with manager, and then a panel-session interview with the team over 2-3 hours. Overall a very unpleasant experience. They tried scheduling me for interviews once during lunch hours and then again after 5pm on a Friday....??? The HR person would also call my cell phone out of nowhere several times without any heads up. There was also zero response for 3 weeks after I completed the online assessment.
