    Software Engineer Interview

    Anonymous Interview Candidate
    No Offer
    Positive Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Chariot Transit in May 2016.

    Interview

I did an initial 30 minute phone screen with the lead engineer. He asked good questions about my work history and was very engaged.

I went in for a in-person interview with him a few days later, which lasted 2-3 hours. Again I thought his questions were good ones. This time they were related to specific technical problems related to the business. I worked through them on the board while he listened and provided occasional hints.

At the end of the interview the CEO came by to introduce himself and we chatted briefly about the company history and business model.

    Interview Questions

The process took 8+ weeks. I interviewed at Chariot Transit.

    Interview

One of the interviewers (Dir of Sales) left my presentation early and was unprepared for the interview - she did not prepare questions (the questions she did ask were vague and unclear) and then was condescending when I asked questions about problems Chariot has faced in the past.

    Business Operations Associate Interview

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Chariot Transit (San Francisco, CA) in August 2016.

    Interview

Applied online and a few days later asked to join Head of Operations for a brief phone call. The person I spoke with seemed engaged and generally interested in my past experience and where I wanted to go in the future. After the 15 minute call, Chariot asked me to submit an analytical assignment showing some sort of data-driven insight within a week. After submitting my assignment a few days later in early August of 2016. I still have yet to receive a response or even a decline almost 2 months later.

    Technical Support Analyst Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in San Francisco, CA
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Chariot Transit (San Francisco, CA).

    Interview

Two phone screens and an onsite if you pass them. First phone screen was with a recruiter. Super nice, warm and interesting conversation about the company. Felt my background was unique and a good fit for the role. However in retrospect there were warning signs I should have acknowledged. When I asked about cross team interactions they said "oh we have happy hours and social events all the time". Which made me think that perhaps this was a bro-y workplace or that there wasn't a lot of direction. Because that question was pretty basic and I expected a work related answer.

Moved on to the second phone screen with a senior level employee. He had a computer science background and very clearly didn't like that I had listed some projects I had personally built with Javascript and other technologies. Pushed me for more information beyond what a technical support analyst would need and generally came off as antagonistic toward me. Also didn't like that I had worked a contract tech support role and didn't continue with the company, nor did he like that I had a teaching background (when the role's main priority is teaching less tech savvy drivers how to use technology).

I generally got the sense that this senior level employee wanted someone with an office IT background (turning computers off and on in person instead of on the phone), who also knows how to teach people with no experience in technology, and can effectively empathize in stressful situations. I had experience doing all these things, but he was very put off by my background and experience nonetheless.

    Interview Questions

    • Tell me about a time when you solved a technical issue for a customer.   Answer Question
    • You've listed Javascript on your resume. When did you use that on a job? (even though I've clearly only worked with it in an academic or personal environment).   Answer Question
    • This is obviously not a programming role. Where do you see yourself going forward in this field?   Answer Question
