    Application

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at City Year (Washington, DC) in February 2017.

    Interview

I applied for the position through Metrolink (Cover Letter and Resume), was selected for an interview, then was asked to fill out the online application. There were two people interviewing me and the questions mostly revolved around my experience working with children and my desire to work with City Year.

    Interview Questions

    • How do you plan on bridging the gap between yourself, coming from a more privileged socio-economic background, and the children you will be working with?   Answer Question

    Application

I applied in-person. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at City Year (Washington, DC) in November 2016.

    Interview

It was an online application which was very straight forward. It had 2 essay questions (why do you want to join City Year and how would City Year help you achieve your personal goals). You also need 2 references. After submitting, the next day I was informed that I was selected for an interview. I had the interview the next week. Interview process was pretty simple. It was an in-person interview which lasted about 45 min. The person I had scheduled my interview with did not actually interview me (another person from city Year did which kind of threw me off). The interviewer explained how she would read the questions off of her laptop and type out all my answers. The questions were mostly behavioral questions (this page really helped). Following the questions, the interviewer asked if I had any questions for her. Make sure you do your research on City Year.

    Interview

Application process is simple. 4 short answer essays, and they ask for 2-3 professional recommenders. The more research you do on the work of the organization, the better, but they want to know what you would bring as a person to the organization. City Year is very big on personal awareness.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at City Year (Washington, DC) in March 2013.

    Interview

You fill out a general form, and then answer four questions that are just assessing whether you actually seem interested in the opportunity for the right reason. Once you fill that out, you may be asked for a phone interview. The interview surprised me because it is very general and is clearly just a list of questions off of a list, none of which are actually looking at your specific experience (i.e. Have you ever worked with children before?..from my resume that's clear).

    Interview Questions

    • There was a question asking about whether you have ever had to rely on other people for the success of something. Ultimately asking whether there was a time if you had to rely on something "bigger than yourself."   Answer Question

    Application

The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at City Year (Washington, DC) in June 2010.

    Interview

I had two phone interviews with two different interviewers. The first one takes about 15 min and the second takes 30-45 min. The interviewers tell you this at the beginning. The interview itself is by no means a conversation. It's very straight forward and they type everything you say into their computer (you can hear them). I would recommend brainstorming some answers to some interview questions before the interview (e.g., what are your strengths/weaknesses). I did this and it helped. Also, because it is a phone interview and they can't see you, keep your resume and anything else you think might help in front of you. Someone suggested I do this, and I'm really glad I had it out because I did have to refer to it during the interview.

A relaxed service oriented environment. The office culture seems to be able to get done what needs to be done while also maintain a level of professionalism.
