    Systems Developer Interview

    Anonymous Interview Candidate
    Declined Offer
    Negative Experience

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at City of Richmond Virginia.

    Interview

I applied online for two jobs, a month apart.

2 months later, I got a sudden phone call asking me to come interview in-person in 2 days. I was not able to make that date on such short notice. I was told that was the only date they were interviewing, with no possibility of reschedule, and that I couldn't be considered for the position if I could not be there that day. I did not attend.

1 month later, I got an email telling me I was scheduled to interview in-person on a specific date & time in 2 days. I was again not able to make that date on such short notice.

In both cases, after 2 months of no communication, I received less than 48 hours notice of an non-negotiable interview time. They are likely losing good candidates by being uncommunicative and inflexible, and they are most certainly wasting a lot of their own time by giving lengthy panel interviews to every candidate without any sort of phone screen or interview.

    Interview

You are called to schedule an interview, you show up (early to get a parking space nearby), you go before a panel of 3 or more who each take turns asking questions. The panel writes down notes while you speak and reviews your answers after you leave. The panel discusses each candidate and applies scores to each question. Each panel member's total scores are averaged and the selected candidate is called for second interview in my case. Days after the second interview the staff supervising the position calls you with an offer.

    Interview Questions

    • Detailed question on your approach to designing a road   1 Answer
    • Experience with managing personnel   1 Answer

    Negotiation
