    Interview

Below are a few questions that will serve you well. You should ask these of any employer.

Ask about the historic turnover in the department and the reason for this.

Ask probing questions to determine the morale level of employees. What gives you the greatest joy and what is the greatest source of frustration? How long do you intend to stay at this institution and why?

Ask for the leadership and mentoring style of senior employees and for references from past employees. Ask for examples of how senior leaders mentored junior staff in the past.

Applicants should seriously consider and research the institution’s reputation in their given field. Calls to peers in the industry would be wise.

Ask about the work experiences of senior leaders prior to joining the institution. Were these within the industry? Keep in mind that education is not a substitute for experience.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at College of the Holy Cross (Worcester, MA) in January 2010.

    Interview

Short phone screen (with HR) and then a day-long interview with various staff and faculty members. One on one interview with the Vice President, and another 1:1 with a Director, but mainly panel/group interviews.

    Interview Questions

    • Not unexpected, but asking for a vision statement for my position was tough.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

Negotiated start date. They offered a salary that was within the range of where I wanted to be, so I negotiated for my second most important factor.
