      Software Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Datadog (New York, NY) in Dec 2016

      Interview

First was a phone screen with a recruiter that told me things I already knew about the company, as I had expressed on my application and a question about my expected salary range and whether I was truly going to be a "remote" employee. These were all things that could've been answered via email. This phase lasted 6 minutes. Second was a coding interview that was well put together using Coderpad . The question posed was very simple and I apparently did very well with it. We also discussed my background at length and got a feel for how working at Datadog would be as we had extra time left over. I was also asked a couple of really simple technical questions. Third was a long delay, followed by a request to write a program that parsed logs in a particular fashion. I don't want to expose the exact nature of this "homework"-like question as it was well put together and they should be able to repeat its use. I needed a non-Windows development environment to do it properly and they waiting while a Linux laptop I ordered arrived. They were very flexible with the wait on my end. The program was fun to complete and took about 7 hours. They responded about two weeks later saying they really liked the submission and wanted to fly me to New York City for a final round of interviews. Fourth was the final interviews which started with an open-ended question about a project I had spearheaded at a previous company. It involved "could you have done this more simply" and some suggestions as to how that could've been accomplished. This was a 1-on-1 with the CTO who exuded intelligence. He convinced me there was another way to accomplish what I did at this previous company and helped me walk through such a solution. The second interview on-site was with a member of the team I was to be joining. It was also 1-on-1. He asked an extremely simple whiteboard programming question that I solved in about 2 minutes. He then asked more about my background and let me ask questions about him and his experience with Datadog. It was very pleasant. We had a team lunch afterward that was nice (paid for by the company.) The final interview was pretty amorphous. It was with the team lead I was to be working with. He asked a couple questions about my use of their product. As I had substantial experience with their product this was appropriate to ask about. He asked a bit more about my experience with my previous company. I was told I would be given and offer or rejection within a "couple of days". I had to repeatedly email them to get a response which they finally gave a full week later. It was a canned rejection stating they were looking for someone with a background that more closely aligned with what they were looking for. However, they never quite made it clear exactly what they were looking for to begin with. This was an expensive and extremely time consuming interview process. Most of the pieces were well put together but the (largely) unexplained waiting over a period of 2 months was, ultimately, pretty rude.

One knowledge interview and one technical interview afterwards. Knowledge was fine. During the tech one, the interviewer was not listening. The problem was a standard one. Got rejected after second round.

      Interview
