Project Controller Interview

Difficult Interview

Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Deloitte in September 2009.

Interview

The interview was one-on-one and they asked some of the toughest quetions I have ever been asked. They were either tough or worded in a way I have never heard the question asked. One of the questions was name one of your values and name a time that you went against that value. I came up with something with respect and a time i had failed to respect someone. But, all in all you have to be extremely prepared and try not to over think!

I applied online. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at Deloitte (Toronto, ON (Canada)) in May 2014.

    Interview

The interview process was extensive. I believe I went through 4 rounds of interviews. Started off with HR, then one senior manager, then another two and finally a director and the person who would ultimately be my manager. The questions were pretty straight forward but the number of interviews was pretty daunting.

    Project Controller Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Los Angeles, CA

    Negative Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Deloitte (Los Angeles, CA) in September 2016.

    Interview

The process involved a HR interview, followed by a phone interview with a senior member of the team. Then 3, 45 minute interviews in the office with 3 different professionals, focused on technical, behavioral and a case study. It also involved a lunch with other candidates and members of the team.

The timing of the interviews was; contacted for an interview with a recruiter, the phone call was 2 days after initial contact, at the time of the interview I was advised they would be putting me through to a second round phone interview. This was scheduled for the following week. On the same day as this interview I was advised that the feedback was positive and I would be invited into the office for third round interviews.

These interviews were scheduled approx 2 weeks after the second phone interview.

The 3 interviews were pretty straight forward and everyone was friendly and knowledgeable as you would expect from Big 4. The lunch was also a great insight into life at Deloitte with people at a more similar level.

The interviews were on a Friday and I followed up with my interviewers and recruiter the following Tuesday. I was advised I would receive an update by the end of the week and I heard from them late Friday afternoon.

The reason for my negative rating is once I received the rejection phone call, I requested feedback on my interview and the reasons they had chosen another candidate. I was told there wasn't and that another candidate suited their requirements at this time, however, I was encouraged to apply again. I believe that after such a lengthy interview process which involves taking a day off work just to attend, you should at least be provided with reasons and an explanation as to why you were unsuccessful so as you can improve on these areas moving forward.

    Interview

Honestly, the interview process itself was fairly simple. After submitting your resume, there is an interview with the recruiter where you talk a little about the role as well as your experience. Second stage of the process is a phone interview with a manager. Again, questions about your experience as well as some general questions. Third stage is in-person interviews.

Here's where Deloitte really dropped the ball. Now it may seem like I'm bitter that I didn't receive an offer but, honestly, I probably would have refused an offer even if I had received one. One of the interviewers (a manager) during my in-person interviews was one of the most unprofessional managers I have ever spoken with. First thing is he was on his computer the entire time. That in itself is ok. When I can count the number of times he looked up from his computer to make eye contact is when it's not ok. It wasn't that he was being rude per se, he was making an obvious statement that he was more important than me and had better things to be doing. To make matters worse, he would ask a question and then interrupt when giving my reply, acting very perplexed to the answer I was giving. This happened on multiple occasions, again a very obvious ploy to make himself seem superior. I could have said the sky was blue and he would have acted like that was the dumbest thing anyone had ever told him.

Bottom line is this: unless you are a recent college graduate stay away from this role. Also, Deloitte if you are reading this, please coach your interviewers on proper interview etiquette. Having an interviewer treat a candidate that poorly is unacceptable.
