    Interview

The first round is the skype interview which seems more like an informal conversation about your research and a chance to know more about theirs. It is useful to be thorough with your research accomplishments ie be very technical! Make sure you've gone through your CV and that you've revised technical findings from all your past projects.

    Interview

Put in a application on December 19, 2016. Application was forwarded to hiring manager. Received a phone call on January 11, 2017 to do a phone interview no email sent before hand to tell me I was going to be interviewed. After the interview waited two weeks and followed up with hiring manager, hiring manager had been on vacation. Told me he would follow up with me, a week later February 8, 2017 checked the status and was no longer under consideration. Complete waste of my time.

It was over the phone. Very easy. I talked to Julia from the Remittances, Migration, and Development program. It was very straightforward. Julia was also very eager to answer my questions, and she was very kind. It was mainly an interview about my interests, and why I wanted to work there.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 6+ weeks. I interviewed at Duke University (Durham, NC) in October 2016.

    Interview

Applied online, was automatically notified it was now with the manager 9 days later, phone interview less than a week later, asked to come in person another week later. Interviewed in person and met at least 10 different staff members from different areas. I spent over 4 hours on campus. I wish I was told it would take up my whole day. Ended up having to pay for my own parking and since it was during lunch time, I was really hungry halfway through the day. 20+ days later, I was emailed that I did not get the position.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Duke University (Durham, NC) in February 2013.

    Interview

After you submit your application to PhD programs in December, usually Duke would start invite people for onsite interviews at mid-January to early Febuary. There will be a little flexibility of choosing the date of your onsite interview, Duke will cover your flight and hotel expenses.

You will be able to name the 3-5 faculty members you are interested in and Duke will do their best in obtaining the interviews. Each faculty member will talk to you for around 15 minutes, during which they learn about your past experience, research interests and also introduce you to their research. Make sure you ask enough questions to help you determine whether you would see yourself working with this specific professor in the future. You will also have the oppportunity of talking to the current graduate students in the program through social hangouts (remember this is also part of the interview too as the current students will be asked to redflag anyone not fit for the program after the interview). It is always helpful to ask the current students on the research areas of faculty members in the program, and have a glimpse into their mentoring style if the current students are willing to share this information.

A great match = research your are interested in + mentoring style that fits your preference + supportive student body that are also intellectually stimulating. Duke overall is more laid-back than other universities, but some PhD programs within Duke can be more intense.

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Duke University (Durham, NC) in August 2015.

    Interview

The interview process was two fold. I had to first interview directly with the person I would be doing research with. He asked me many questions specific to the cases that I would be working on. He then gave me an evaluation task that included an assessment of the theory he was working on and a search of relevant material. Only after I passed the evaluation task was I offered a job.
