A modem or router is a way of connecting to the internet. You could use how police directs traffic with a whistle (whistle seeing sound you cannot see just as signal in router is) while traffic lights are out. You could use a super hero (one that can fly and one that has to use a vehicle like spider man and superman). Depends on the eight year old. Think of someone you know, what they like, and plan to explain it to them that way.

Give him a tour of computer history museum (its available online too), and explain to him that connecting networks to each other requires special-purpose computers called gateways or routers as intermediaries. Inspire him with stories about youngest cisco certified or mcses above all tell him "to stay hungry and stay foolish"
