Category Manager - Travel and Real Estate Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Houston, TX
    Declined Offer
    Negative Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at Halliburton (Houston, TX) in May 2015.

    Interview

HR Advisor emailed me based on my LinkedIn profile (Was a passive candidate as I am currently employed and not looking for employment.) Met with the Hiring Manager (HM) and other stake holders. Initially, everyone appeared to be nice and I had some great discussions. Overall culture appeared to be a fit. 1st red flag, however, was when HM asked me about personal things (family) during the 1st interview, which I told him was illegal. Entire process took 2.5 months - which seemed WAY too long. 2nd red glad was when HM set up an appointment to give me an offer and was a "no show" and I didn't hear back for 1.5 business days. Finally they gave me a verbal offer and discontinued talks after HM told me I was not being transparent (I refused to provide him current compensation at my company, but was willing to provide a range).

    Reasons for Declining

I based my decision on the red flags I perceived during the interview process and how I was treated by the Hiring Manager during the interviews and follow up discussions.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at Halliburton (Houston, TX) in May 2015.

    Interview

The main lobby was warm. The AC couldn't keep up while I waited an extra 20 minutes for my interview. As soon as the interview started, I felt like I was in trouble. I was sent here by a recruiter to fill a temp position. I understood it to be entry level for a new graduate. However the interviewer wanted someone who had experience with pre-credits, SAP, and actually working in the general ledger. I don't have that experience yet, so after fumbling through an answer, I admitted that I expected to gain that experience through this position, not already have it.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Halliburton (Houston, TX).

    Interview

I applied on a Wednesday and received a call the following Thursday. I had a brief phone interview and was told I was a great candidate and would hear back soon to set up an interview. They called the next day and my interview was scheduled for the following Monday! The interview began as scheduled, however I quickly realized how over prepared I was. The questions and style of the interview were VERY relaxed and laid-back. It felt less like an interview and more like a nice chat about my work experience. As much as I had prepared, I wasn't expecting that since they are one of the biggest and most successful companies in the world. But like I've read in other reviews, this seems to be their style. The entire interview lasted about 30-45 min. In the end, I thought it went well and I was grateful to have had the experience. I sent a brief follow-up e-mail the next morning but never heard back. I only recently received a rejection letter via e-mail, 2 months after the in-person interview.

    Interview Questions

    • There weren't any difficult questions, but I was not expecting the interviewer to talk more than me. I learned a lot about the person and position, but they did not get to learn enough about me and how my skills and experience would value their department.   Answer Question

    Electrical Engineer I Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Houston, TX
    No Offer
    Neutral Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Halliburton (Houston, TX) in October 2014.

    Interview

I had the first round interview on campus, after applying to the company through our college website. I was a bit surprised since I did not visit them during career fair (their line was too long).
The first round interview was with their college recruiting HR manager. Although it was STAR questions, the interview flows more likes a conversation than Q&A style.
I was invited to a second round interview at Houston and it was a 2 day event. The first day was not an interview, we just went there and got to know the hiring managers, got a tour of the site and had dinner with some engineers.
The second day we had the interviews. They were hiring 2 electrical engineers for the drilling department. I had 2 interviews with 2 different team. The interview really depends on the interviewer, the first guy I had was more technical orientated, so he asked how I would design a certain circuit, asked about systemverilog, simple DSP knowledge, and basic programming skill.
The second interviewer focused on my previous projects. He asked me to draw out the circuit of a previous design I made. He also asked about other technical aspects of old projects that I have done.

Side note: On the same day, there were also mechanical engineers interviewing for the company, they all had behavorial questions only.

    Interview Questions

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Halliburton (Houston, TX) in October 2014.

    Interview

There was a university interview through the career center. After that phase there were several phone interviews with managers of the desired group, where behavioral and a few technical background questions were asked. There was also the opportunity to ask managers questions about the company. A few weeks later there was a job offer.

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Halliburton (Houston, TX) in September 2014.

    Interview

Easy and to the point. The job description was very generic, so do prepare to ask a lot of job related questions. The same title can have different job roles. Arrive early if you are going to the corporate office, it is lot of walking and you can get lost easily.
