Application

The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Hillside Children's Center (Rochester, NY) in December 2010.

Interview

There was one interview. It lasted approximately an hour and a half. The first portion consists of typical interview questions relationg to the job: education background (college diploma not required), job experience (especially that relating to youth), why you want to work with this population. The next portion of the interview consisted of different scenarios involving the youth population and how you would react in each situation. If it goes well the interviewer either asks you what population you would prefer or tells you what house/cottage needs staff. You then must do a 4 hour shadow shift to see if you are a good fit for that house and if you feel comfortable doing that type of work. From there they let you know if you make the cut or if a better house might be a better fit for you.

Interview Questions

  • If a child is upset about the way another staff treated them and that other staff was in the wrong in your opinion, how do you react to the child? Do you talk to your coworker about it or go to the boss about the situation?   1 Answer

Negotiation

I did not negotiate. Price is primarily dependent upon education level.
