How do you handle rude customers?

I listen to the customers complaints to determine exactly what the problem is. I then respond while smiling to lighten the tone of my voice, politely apologizing for any inconvenience. I will try to correct the situation for the customer if I have the authority. If the customer is rude or persistent enough, I do not have an issue calling management in to intervene and diffuse the situation.
