    Software Developer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in New York, NY
    No Offer
    Positive Experience

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at IBM (New York, NY) in December 2017.

    Interview

I applied through UNCUBED and 3 weeks later I got an invitation to take part in the first interview where I got to record myself answering 3 technical questions followed by 3 coding questions (45 minutes each) followed by a question where I needed to explain what was I doing in the 3rd coding question and finally what my thought was after taking the interview. The second interview is a GURU interview where I was facing an actual online interviewer over the HIREVUE platform where this 1-hr interview consisted of three parts (technically four); he started with explaining what it is that he does in IBM then asked me about myself. Next, he went over some computer histories and asked me some questions based on Operating System, then a coding (very easy) question, and finally he went over some of my projects.

(I STILL AM WAITING FOR A REPLY BACK FROM IBM thus saying I didn't get the offer)

    Interview Questions

    • Why IBM?   Answer Question
    • What makes you a good fit for IBM?   Answer Question
    • What was one of the moments where you had to lead your team and in a project and you had a very good impact on the final outcome of that project?   Answer Question
    • First of 3 Coding Questions in the first interview:

Fixed Array N[i], Integers P and Q. If N[i] is divisible by P then print "OUT", and if N[i] is divisible by Q then print "THINK"; if N[i] is divisible by both P and Q then concatenate OUT and THINK (hence, OUTTHINK), and if N[i] isn't divisible by any of P and Q then print the number in that index.   Answer Question
    • Second of the 3 coding question in the first interview:

Names of medication are given in a string and are comma delimited. A second string is given with fewer (may contain names from the first string or may not contain any names in the first string at all). Compare both strings and print out the common names in both strings.   Answer Question
    • Last of the three coding questions in the first interview:

It was an inventory based question.

      Apple Sold in the farm

      214 out of 250 on April 1
      179 out of 250 on April 2
      230 out of 250 on April 3

      Orange Sold in the farm

      0 out of 200 on April 1
      180 out of 250 on April 2
      200 out of 250 on April 3

      Mango Sold in the farm

      100 out of 100 on April 1
      0 out of 200 on April 2
      50 out of 250 on April 3

Output all the sold merchandise in a datewise inventory. (E.g. On April 1, Apple, Orange, and Grapes were sold in x,y, and z amount)   1 Answer
    • The GURU coding question:

A fixed Size array is given, the target is 9. Find as many two numbers from the array that add up to the target. Do not Print the duplicates!   1 Answer

    Interview Questions

    • Imagine that you are creating a monitoring solution for your service. What characteristics, key performance indicators, or output would you consider in determining the availability of the service to your end clients?   Answer Question
    • Can you please tell me about some popular cloud automation tools, and describe their potential use?   Answer Question
    • Imagine that you are creating a monitoring solution for your service. What characteristics, key performance indicators, or output would you consider in determining the availability of the service to your end clients?   Answer Question
    • Parse a file containing multiple groups of IP addresses and print out only the group of IP addresses that match the label "Houston" which should be hard coded in your function for this particular exercise. The group name will be on its own line and will be unique in the input file. Each IP address will be on its own line in the input file. The file can contain blank lines. The function should output the IP addresses comma separated. Input: A sample inventory file which may contain various text and comments along with valid and invalid IP addresses. For example: [Dallas] 10.20.30.40 10.20.30.41 10.40.20.1 [Houston] 9.20.30.5 9.30.4.10 [Seattle] 172.10.2.35 Output: The list of IP addresses separated by commas. With "Houston" hard coded as the label, the output of the above example should be:\ 9.20.30.5,9.30.4.10   Answer Question
    • Using the Fibonacci sequence, print out a lower case letter (from the English alphabet) the number of times of the Fibonacci number in the corresponding index. A number in the Fibonacci sequence is calculated by: n[x-2] + n[x-1] = n[x] The sequence starts with n[1] = 1 and n[2] = 1. The index begins at 1, not 0. Be careful of off by 1 errors. You do not have to worry about exceeding the English alphabet s max index of 26. Example: Input: 5 Letter = e Fibonacci number n[5] = 5 Output: eeee Input: A single integer. Output: A number of lower case letters as described above.   Answer Question
    • Often there is a need to run a task across a set of machines. The list of IP addresses for these machines could come from different sources and therefore be in different formats. Starting with a file that contains mainly IP addresses, one per line, your task is to write a function that converts the list of IP addresses into a comma separated list of IP address, ignoring any line that starts with a # and ignoring any line that does not contain a valid IP address. Input: A sample inventory file which may contain various text and comments along with valid and invalid IP addresses. For example: [zone1] 10.171.102.174 #10.171.102.195 10.171.102.182 [zone2] 10.171.3.172 10.171.3.21 #10.171.3.224 Output: The list of IP addresses separated by commas. For the above example, that would be: 10.171.102.174,10.171.102.182,10.171.3.172,10.171.3.21   Answer Question

IBM GBS Consulting By Degrees Entry Level Consultant Interview

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at IBM (New York, NY) in October 2017.

    Interview

I was referred in by a partner and worked with the head recruiter of the program who took weeks to reply back mostly after the second or third follow-up. I was initially contacted by e-mail to speak on the phone with the HR person and we went from there. I was then given an intended month and kept in touch for three months next, I was given an intended date for the month after and the hr personnel still wasn't able to schedule anything. I then finally got a date but still needed more information such as time and location which I didn't find out up till a day before the interview, that was when I also found out that the person that was supposed to conduct my case study had a client emergency and so I would have to do well on both the behavioral parts in order to take the case study. A few minutes before the interview while I was setting up and not thinking about checking my email, I got an email from the hr person saying she didn't know if she provided me with this information already and she apologizes if she already did but the second one will be a phone one. after waiting for the second person on hireview, the webcam app they used for the interview, I went to my email and saw that I would be getting a call and called the second interviewer back after two minutes of her calling me. This second interviewer who was under the entertainment and media consulting umbrella had a rude tone, was chewing something while asking me questions and did not know that the company no longer has a mission statement and really work off of their values. She had been with the company for seven years. I then followed up with my Hr person thanking her for the interview and asking her for the interviewer's emails and didn't get a reply, followed up a week after and then got a default E-mail three weeks later saying I didn't get into the program. I was really excited about this opportunity, and not to discredit the first interviewer who was also a partner, consulting for the fin-tech industry and was absolutely amazing, professional and very smart, the HR person and the second interviewer was a complete disappointment and not what I expected from IBM.

I met with 3 interviewers over a 90 minute period. IBM told they would get back to me in 3 weeks- but they didn't. Emailed my recruiter a month later, still no response (it's January). Interviewed with a recent alum who I had mutual friends with-- I felt it was too personal/ not professional. Went into the interview as IBM as my first choice... Not a fan anymore.
