Product Design Engineer Interview Cupertino, CA

If you plot a Stress-Strain curve on top of each other. How

would Annealed, Aluminum and Hardened steel compared? Yield Strength, Modulus of Elasticity and Ultimate Strength

Interview Answer

1 Answer

Aluminum has lowest young's modulus (slope), yield strength and ultimate strength.

Annealed steel is softened and more ductile than normal steel, having uniform and stable microstructure , thus it has higher modulus and yield strength than Aluminum but lower than hardened steel .

Hardened steel has highest young's modulus and yield/ultimate strength, but is least ductile (strain at fracture is lowest among the 3 material).
