    Investment Banking Summer Analyst Interview

Anonymous Employee in New York, NY
    Accepted Offer

    Application

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at Jefferies & Company (New York, NY).

    Interview

On-campus two back-to-back interviews. The first was behavioral and the second was technical. The behavioral was quite relaxed, questions ranging from talking through resume, how you allocated time during a week (remember to mention you spent a lot of time social) and macro economic questions. The technical one touched basic accounting, metrics, and DCF. Just make sure that you know all the basic things and can handle challenges under pressure.

    Positive Experience

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Jefferies & Company (New York, NY) in January 2009.

    Interview

On campus recruiting: first round on campus, then final rounds at Jefferies

Off campus recruiting: call, then final rounds

First rounds are 30-45 minutes, final rounds are 3-5 hours long and comprise of senior and junior bankers for technical and fit interviews.

It's important to do well on both technical and fit interviews, but if the most senior banker likes you, you're typically set provided there are no major hesitations from your other interviewers.

Questions are mostly related to accounting, valuation methodologies, deals in the industry, why IB, what does an analyst do, why would you be a good analyst, what are your major strengths and weaknesses, etc.

    Interview Questions

    • If D&A went up by x%, how would that affect the rest of the financial statements? Walk me through each line that would be affected.   Answer Question

    Interview

Non-core process: 2 rounds of phone interviews, followed by a non-core superday about a couple weeks later. First round was mostly behavioral, very basic technicals. Second round was more technical and very resume-based. Superday was 3 20 minute interviews. Each interview had a specific purpose. First interview was resume based to see if you're smart. Second round is all technical. Third round is mostly behavioral, to get to know you better.
