Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Microsoft (Redmond, WA) in September 2012.

Interview

Almost all candidates get sourced from internal contacts so networking in is the best bet to get an interview. Interviews are called Loops and you typically meet with 4-6 people over the course of a day plus possibly an HR person. They will usually give you a schedule for the first half of your day but plan to be there all day.
Interviewers usually have specific focus areas they will drill you on (like Cross Group Collaboration, Raw intelligence, Strategic influence...). Interviewers will talk to each other via instant message or email so if you struggle with a certain line of questioning, the next interviewer might drill you a little harder.
You will know if you in the top group of candidates if you are scheduled for and actually meet with a VP or GM level interviewer. These are called "As Appropriate" interviews and you only meet with them if you are in the top couple candidates.

Interview Questions

  • Engineers tend to get the wacky game type questions. Business and Marketing people get drilled on case studies often trying to solve huge issues the company is trying to solve. For example, if you are meeting with the Windows Phone group, they might ask you how to grow share for Windows Phone.   1 Answer
