I applied in-person. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Payless ShoeSource (Ottawa, ON) in Nov 2012
Interview
I dropped in my resume and I was asked to come in for a group interview. In the group interview they ask questions to everyone. They had quiet a few role-playing types of questions.
The type of questions asked:
.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
.How do you feel about staying in an extra few minutes if the supervisor or the other person responsible in the next shift didn't show up on time?
.Where you ever late in your previous job?
.What you do if the customer picked out a shoe that did not look nice on him/her?
.How would you treat a customer when they come in the store?
.What would you do if you caught someone shoplifting?
.How will you deal with 3 customers at the same time?
After the interview you have to complete a personality test (about 1 hour/40 minutes)
.the longer it takes you to finish the test the better
.a way you can tell you will not get hired if it takes you about 20-25 minutes to the test

I applied in-person. I interviewed at Payless ShoeSource (Ontario, CA)
Interview
Fairly typical interview process, they call and set up an available time with you. They do not do group interviews. They ask fairly typical questions pertaining to retail, no questions stand out.
The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Payless ShoeSource (New York, NY)
Interview
Applied online, called within 2-3 days to follow up. I did receive a call back to schedule an interview with the store manager, after that I had to schedule and interview with the District manager (Store manager called me back after the interview to schedule it) fairly long process for such a basic position. Store manager asked me retail related questions such as "tell me about a difficult customer" "sale me this shoe and a accessory". Interview with the District Manager was more of a conversation, we talked about store goal such as sales and what my job really is as a sales associate.
I applied online. I interviewed at Payless ShoeSource in Nov 2016
Interview
The interview was very to the point, your typical interview for a retail position. Asking about experience, whether youre good at sales, good with people. The manager seemed really nice, was very outgoing and friendly.
