Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at River Island Clothing in July 2019.

Interview

Fill out an online application, basic background stuff (right to work etc), availability and attach your CV. Got an email inviting me to a group assessment event the following week.
They don't have a dress code for the interview, just wear something on-trend that you're comfortable in, I wore a patterned shirt, jeans and trainers.
When you arrive you're sent to the interview area, ours was done on the shop floor because the interview is done after the store is closed. We all sat in a circle waiting for everyone to arrive and were asked to fill out our availability and contact number again - they'll ask about xmas and new year too. Make sure you try to talk to people as much as possible, they like to see you're a friendly and sociable person and after all the job requires you to talk to customers. They asked us to discuss in 2s/3s why we liked RI, why we wanted to work there, what we think about them as a brand etc. Firstly the managers introduced themselves and we went around the circle doing an ice breaker:
Introduce yourself
Tell us a fun fact about yourself
Tell us about a time you received the best customer service
This is still all marked though and they make notes on it. Then they asked us to talk again in groups about why we applied/wanted to work for RI, then we had to tell the others our reasons. They'll be listening in and watching how you all interact so make sure you listen to your groups ideas and make your voice heard too. Try not to give run of the mill answers, talk about trends, atmosphere in store, WOW factors (they'll send you some info about these when they email about interviews).
Finally they paired you off and you have to do a customer/sales advisor role play, this is really easy and relaxed, come up with a situation e.g I'm going on holiday can you help me with some outfits etc. Make sure you're really friendly and chatty, listen to your 'customer', put together a whole outfit where possible ie. shoes, belt, accessories etc as it shows you can upsell. A manager will come watch you and make notes for a few minutes on each person.
Finally they get you back in the circle, tell you a bit more about when you'll hear from them, what the company is like to work for, and give you the chance to ask questions.
I got a call 2 days later offering me a job.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at River Island Clothing (Westfield, South East England, England (UK)) in April 2016.

    Interview

There was about 10 of us when I arrived, I took the last day slot of the recruitment event so Im assuming thats why it was significantly less than previous days (people have posted up to 30 people). I suggest going to river island and seeing how they dress if you are not sure - its usually quite cool/urban; black jeans, trainers, and a cute top. i wore a high neck top because its currently on trend.

they really do ask to see your passport/birth certificate and dont just quickly scan it they READ it so don't assume its something you can bypass if you forget. we went in to what looked like a spacious locker room with tables and chairs set up. we were asked to introduce ourselves, age, what we currently do etc. i purposely spoke first just so that even if you dont get it (like me lol) they will remember that you are confident. everyone was quiet in my group i dont even know if anyone was hired (the guy even said one group he hired nobody). then we were asked why we wanted to work with river island. dont say something cliche or robotic. talk about the atmosphere, the people/team etc.

two tasks we had were 1) to create an outfit for a celebrity in our group 2) Taken on the shop floor to interact with a "customer" (it was just another staff member so dont panic).
The first one was fun. We only had five minutes and we had a male celebrity for some music festival (cant remember his name). When we came back and talked about it and i spoke first but from a teams perspective (we/our). he loved it and had no critiques. the other group had critiques but they also had a woman which is much broader than a mans scope of fashion.

then we had to go on the shop floor and were taken one by one to interact. i was asked for a suit for her husband for a party but casual so no black. i gave her a grey suit and paired it with a pink long sleeve t shirt and talked about colours, trends etc. the guy said "yep thats fine" and it was probably no longer than 2 minutes. as we walked back he told me well done and i did great.

and thats it. im guessing mine was a lot easier than others because we werent asked about customer service and i wish they did because i was prepared for that. i honestly was sure i had gotten it because he was happy with my answers - but i think i didnt get it because i had booked a holiday outside of the country during the time of when the induction would probably be - so i think it was too close for them to hire me knowing that someone else would be available.

bottom line is 1- do your research 2- be confident and speak up thats the whole point of a group interview 3 - try and get with fashion trends 4 - relaaaxxxx they know when you are nervous and if a group of random people make you uneasy, then you wouldnt seem fit on the shop floor.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at River Island Clothing (Sheffield, England (UK)) in April 2016.

    Interview

Applied online and got an e-mail the next day asking to book onto a recruitment day, the nearest one was two weeks away. There were about 20 other people there and they went round the circle asking us to introduce ourselves and say what we do/describe a time when we received good customer service. We then had to do a role play in groups. It has been two weeks since and I have not heard anything back, which I think is really unprofessional.

    Interview

Group activity followed by face to face interview. Had to pick outfit for a celebrity and show to the group. TIP: pick a celeb people know and include lots of accessories it will show you ability to style and upsell. Interveiw includes giving examples of when you have delivered good customer service, when u have worked in a team and when u have solved a problem. TIP:focus on all the skills you used in your example such as listening, communicating, being helpful, going out of your way to help someone rather than telling a long pointless story.

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at River Island Clothing in September 2013.

    Interview

The interview process was casual and relaxed with questions such as what do you know about the company, what can you bring to river island, a time when u have delivered customer service. All the usual questions. It's normally a group interview so it's a lot more relaxed. You may be asked to create an outfit on the shop floor then have to explain it.

    Interview

We were in a staff room and we had to introduce ourselves to everyone. Then we had to explain why we wanted to work for River Island. We had to pretend to be a customer and then a sales advisor and try to up sell as much as possible. Then we had spoke to the people in charge individually to talk about availability etc.
They were looking at us the whole time but we were all being really loud so I don't know how they made the final decision.

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at River Island Clothing in June 2016.

    Interview

I applied online in the evening and the next morning I received an email saying they would like me to attend a recruitment event. I chose my time for the recruitment event and arrived at the store. There were about 8 other girls also there for the event. We got shown to the staff room and the store manager ( from another store) introduced herself. We then did an icebreaker and we had to say who we are and a little bit about ourselves. ( It was not as awkward as I thought it was going to be!) We filled out a form with our availability on it, e.g the days of the week and also our availability over the Christmas period. We then got put into small groups and we had to do some role play activities where one person was the shop assistant and the other was a customer, we were not really watched so it was not too awkward! Then we were given a celebrity and we had to find them an outfit and then explain why we chose the outfit. We then went back up to the staff room and met our store manager who was lovely. She talked a bit about the incentives and the company. They said we would find out at the end of the day if we got the job. Luckily for me, I did although fewer hours than I originally wanted but hopefully can build them up more.

In the interview I have to say there were not many opportunities to 'shine' so don't be shy and be yourself.
