I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Sargent & Lundy (Chicago, IL) in October 2010.
The hiring process was straightforward. I interviewed with 3 departmental managers. Everything went well.
Reasons for Declining
They offered me $34/hr. If you go to the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics website, the most recent data(2009) states that the lowest paid nuclear engineer in Chicago makes $34/hr. I have a masters with 1 year experience. Why should I start at the same level as a bachelors degree with no experience. If this is such an upscale company, why would I be the lowest paid nuclear engineer in Chicago?
The problem lies with the cost of living in Chicago. At the national level (according to the Department of Labor), 15% of all Nuclear engineers make $34/hr or less. But in the Chicago metropolitan area, the lowest paid nuclear engineer makes $34/hr.
