Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Stanley Black & Decker in January 2011.

Interview

+ Rigorous process consisting of: recruiter phone screen, HR phone screen, phone call with hiring manager, one-day office visit (which consisted of interviews with senior HR person and various VPs).

+ Interviews were about 60% behavioral/situational, 40% other; the interviewers were scripted to some extent, but willing to go "off-script" to explore by background

+ HR interview was the most challenging; at SB&D, HR is a strategic business partner for the other functions, and the senior HR folks are smart, business-savvy people

Interview Questions

  • You are an aerospace guy, how do you become a tool guy?   Answer Question

Negotiation

Didn't want to or need to negotiate base salary; as an experienced professional, wanted 3 weeks of vacation, and was able to get it quite easily. Advice? As with any opportunity, make sure you interview THEM. Assess the fit carefully. Understand the organization structure - is it something new that they are experimenting with, or is it somewhat stable?
