    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at The Home Depot in March 2016.

    Interview

I applied to Home Depot online after seeing that a location had a banner outside that read: Now Hiring. Three weeks later I receive an email from The Home Depot Retail Staffing Center that they wanted to speak to me about my application. The email offered the options to call them first or wait for them to call. I didn't want to risk missing their call, so I called first.
First there was an automated system asking me some basic questions as to whether I wouldn't mind working in a retail environment, whether I knew if it was a part-time position, and if I was eighteen at least. After a few questions from the automated system, it plugged me to a live operator-- who gave me a small interview. She asked me situational questions like: Describe a time where you provided exceptional customer service. All her questions were of the same nature. She then decided I was a good candidate and set me up for an interview with a manager from the location.
I went to the interview and the manager I spoke to was very friendly and sociable, and me and her were similar in nature so I felt like I had an advantage there. She asked me situational questions as well. I remember one of the questions being: Describe a time where you had to establish a relationship with a customer in order to sell them something. The questions were difficult in my opinion but it's important to rehearse the night before and look online for how others would answer interview questions.
I thought I didn't get the job because she didn't offer me a position right away, or ask me to stay to do a drug test-- so I went home. As I got home, I got a phone call from a different manager asking me to come back and that she'd like me to accept a job offer. So I did well.
I would like to mention that I have absolutely no experience in Flooring, and that that isn't a problem at all. The Home Depot will provide the suffecient training you require to work in that department if you have none at all.

No negotiation was offered. I'm still waiting on results from my drug test, but from the phase of accepting the job offer-- there was no negotiation open.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at The Home Depot in November 2014.

    Interview

I got a call from their call center who was conducting the initial interview. The person was real nice but the questions were somewhat generic at first. I got the feeling that this initial interview could not give them a true picture of my abilities or personality. I also felt the interviewer was not well versed in her job. She was trying to type my responses. She kept reading them back and I had to keep editing them with her. This particular part of the process will probably close doors on some really good people.

    Interview Questions

    • The most difficult question was - " give us an example of a difficult situation you have been in with a customer and how you were able to satisfy that customer."   Answer Question

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at The Home Depot in September 2014.

    Interview

After applying you will get an email saying to call a 1800 number. You can either go ahead and call the number or wait for them to call you (usually within 24hours of receiving the email). The person will do a qualifying questionnaire to see if you are a good fit for the job. During the questionnaire if you answer any question with an answer that will disqualify you, they will stop the questionnaire. If you make it all the way through and qualify for the position, they will schedule you for an interview at the store. The interview will be 2-3 days after the call. The in-store interview is 1 on 1 with a member of management. Once completing the interview, if they feel you are qualified, they will give you a drug test form. There are only a handful of doctors they accept for the drug test, and it must be done within 24 hours. The store will also run a background check. Once you pass both the drug test and background check, you will be called to start training for your position. Depending on the position the computer training will take 2-4 days. Then you will start working at your position.

    Interview Questions

    • I didn't find any of the questions difficult. It was basic questions, such as, telling them a time you dealt with a difficult customer, a time you went above and beyond for a customer, why you qualify for the position, etc. It only consists of 6 questions.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

I was hired as a lot associate, but managed to move up to a sales associate after the first 6 hours of training. I had a lot of customer service experience prior to working here, so I talked it over with HR and she moved me on up the ladder.

    Interview

Answering corporate mumbo jumbo questions. Was getting promotion interview from cashier position, so it was very cut and dry with ASM already pretty much choosing me but having to go through the measures. Three questions, three rote answers. Basic give an example when... type questions. Pretty much all situational type questions. Give examples and the outcome.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at The Home Depot (Bainbridge, OH) in July 2012.

    Interview

What a nightmare this was. I applied online and was called a few days later. I did an interview over the phone and everything went well. They set up a time for me to go into the store for an interview. When I arrived, the HR person was too busy with an orientation to interview me and just passed it off to some random department manager. This was disturbing because obviously she double booked herself, it's not like she was just caught up in something unavoidable. Interview was fine but it was clear this guy didnt know a thing about interviewing someone (rude, almost mean). I was contacted a week later for a second interview. Later, they cancelled and rescheduled for a Sunday morning. When I arrived on Sunday, the manager was not there again. Some 18 year old kid interviewed me instead but it was a complete waste of time since he could not make a decision anyway. I called to follow up to see when I should come in and they scheduled me for another interview (3rd or 4th if you count the phone interview!) a week later. Then the day before, they cancelled AGAIN! By the way, I am qualified for the position with a four year BS degree in Pre-architecture and Interior Design and 5 years experience working exclusively in flooring (and I'm cute and friendly too!). I guess it worked out in the end because I interviewed for a visual merchandising position elsewhere and was hired ON THE SPOT. Home depot, you missed out on a qualified individual and have lost a $5,000+/year customer.
