There were a number of logic puzzles within the interview

, the one I remember was comparing the height of a body of water with a ship sitting on top of it, compared to the heigh after the ship had been sunk.

Interview Answer

1 Answer

In both cases, the height of the water is related to the volume of water plus the volume displaced by the boat. Since the volume of water is unchanged, the change in height is determined only by the volume displaced by the boat. When the boat is floating, it displaces an amount of water equal in weight. When it is sunk, it displaces some amount less than it weighs (or else it would still float!). Therefore the water will be higher when the boat is floating.
