Application

I applied online. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) in March 2010.

Interview

My first interview experience for my first job was a great learning experience. I interviewed with a few of the staff members, including the woman who's job I was interviewing for (she was moving to a new position within the department). It was relaxed and much like a conversation, instead of a stressful experience. My second interview was with my eventual boss, and another senior staff member. They asked more pointed questions, but still made me feel at ease by conversing with me. Unfortunately here, the interview process can drag on, and even the initial application phase can take months. I applied for that job in January and did not hear anything until March of the same year. I didn't officially get hired until a month after that. The second position I interviewed for here, which is my current role, was hurried and unorganized. I felt as though the interviewers (my eventual supervisors) were uninterested in the interview and just wanted to get out and do whatever else was on their minds. They seemed surprised when I had questions, and acted as though I was holding them up. This process was much quicker, however than the first one.

Interview Questions

  • In my first interview, the eventual boss kept asking me "What else do you want to know? What other questions do you have?" I was running out of ideas!   Answer Question

Negotiation

There wasn't really one, as this was my first job and I had no idea what I was doing! My boss told me "I can offer you $ XX,XXX - is that ok?" At the time - i.e. living at my mom's house, never made more than part-time hourly wage - it seemed like a lot of money so I said yes! right away.
