    Difficult Interview

    Application

    I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Verizon (Washington, DC) in September 2016.

    Interview

    I was emailed a link to do video questionnaire. 5 questions that I had to respond to on the spot and record it. I received a random phone call (from another state) in the morning to ask questions that "could not wait". The questions were extremely intrusive and irrelevant. She was very rude and unapologetic. And this had been my worst interview ever.

    Application

    I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Verizon (Warren, NJ) in October 2017.

    Interview

    I was the interviewer. I am interested in seeing if they know what is on their resume. To do this, I ask about 30-45 minutes of technical questions about C, Unix and SQL (Oracle) with two or three programming exercises.

    Interview Questions

    • On Unix, you have a program that worked fine with your unit testing and in QA and when it got to Production, it crashed horribly in ten hours after processing, say ten million requests. How do you approach such a situation?   Answer Question
    • "I am sorry for asking such an elementary question but we have to ask" In C, what is the difference between strcpy and memcpy? Have you used memmove? How is that different from memcpy?   Answer Question
    • In Unix, what are some ways to communicate between two processes?   Answer Question
    • Have you dealt with alignment? Given a structure:
      struct {
          char c;
          int ii;
      } var;

      how big is var?   Answer Question
    • Have you dealt with swapping when sending data between little endian and big endian machines? Where?   Answer Question
    • Here are two tables, please write a select statement that will pull these columns from that table and those columns from this table. How would the query change if we needed an outer join?   Answer Question
    • On Unix, you just downloaded a few hundred files from another system to a new directory and the names are all upper case. You want to rename all the files to lower case. You want to keep the contents of the files the same but change the names to lower case. What do you do?   Answer Question
    • I always ask, we need a C function to do some string manipulation. We just moved from another system, where this was part of the standard library and it is not there on this system. Here is the prototype, please implement this for us. The exact details change but it involves adding and/or removing strings from an input string. If you have done much C string manipulation, it won't cause any trouble. If not, you will crash and burn and it will be very obvious.   Answer Question

    I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Verizon (Basking Ridge, NJ) in September 2016.

    Interview

    There was a video Interview, which consisted of 6 behavior questions and one of the question asked about how you worked in a group and how you keep up with the current technologies. After the video interview, there was a programming challenge which you had to submit through hackerrank. Once this process was over, I was invited to an onsite interview where they mostly asked about your resume and technical experience. 4 weeks later I was offered a job.

    Software Engineering Interview

    Easy Interview

    Application

    I applied through college or university. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at Verizon (New York, NY) in October 2016.

    Interview

    After applying very early during the school year, I received an email 2 days later to complete a HireVue video interview, asking you generic behavioral questions. About a month later, I was invited to attend their onsite interview, which was again a simple 45 minute behavioral interview except with an engineering manager. Despite having an itinerary of 4 hours, they could have sent us a specified time slot instead of waiting in a conference room for 2+ hours. Furthermore, some of the other applicants waiting in the room with me had their interview delayed to later in the day because some of the interviewers didn't even show up to work. While the interviewer I spoke to was thankfully a delight and initially sold me on wanting to intern at Verizon, I have waited (rather, I am still waiting) over two months only to receive two emails stating they are trying to find the "best fit" for me. Furthermore, the second email they sent me was addressed to a different person and contained a clearly copied and pasted message which they didn't even bother to edit themselves. Here is a portion of the email: "We are still working hard to find a great fit for you and are working with hiring managers across (Function)." They didn't ask me a single technical question.

    This has convinced me that I would never want to work here for both a full time and internship position and would highly suggest to others to look elsewhere for a career in software engineering.

    Interview Questions

    • Generic behavioral questions, such as "What was a technical challenge that you had to overcome, and what were the steps you took to resolve the challenge and move forward?"   Answer Question

    Application

    I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Verizon in October 2018.

    Interview

    I had a on-demand video screen, and the interview website is clunky and does not let you start over if you are not happy with your response. You can only have 96 hours before the invitation expires, which is not helpful at all when you are in school. You can potentially email a recruiter, but in my case my schedule did not work out either way.

    I applied on line then went through on line behavioral testing where you recorded your answers based on questions that they had predetermined. Nothing special they were just simple behavioral problems.

    The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Verizon in February 2009.

    Interview

    The interview process started with a phone interview and then again two HR interviews, one on phone and the next was in person, one on one. This process itself took about four weeks and very long waits.

    Later they scheduled a group interview with some of the team members and questions were general It questions to questions more specific for the position I was being interviewed for.
    My experience is that they were not very well prepared for the interview themselves and did not have a very clear understanding of their own requirements. Not well organized and I am still waiitng to hear from them.
    Let's see how long this takes!
