I applied online. I interviewed at W.W. Norton (New York, NY) in March 2019.
Initial communication was very responsive and moved quickly. After an intro call, I was brought in for an onsite which lasted a few hours, meeting 6 people in total from various teams. Each of them did their best to keep the conversation pleasant and comfortable. Technical questions were relatively basic.
A full week after the onsite, I was given a technical coding assignment, which I completed over several hours and submitted through github. After being told the hiring manager was away on PTO for a week, all communication ceased, and nobody bothered to even look at the assignment (no access to the private repo was requested or granted). After waiting for a response, I followed up by email and still received no reply.
I understand there are many issues regarding communication in tech hiring, but being ghosted after spending considerable time and effort reflects poorly on the HR department, especially since it was a pleasure otherwise.
