Interview

I received a brief email ("Currently the group is building out our team and we’ve identified you as a leading expert in this field. We are looking to grow our team. Are you open to having a conversation/interview this week about joining our group full-time?")
After I responded in the affirmative, the team leader and I had a lengthy phone conversation, after which I was flown out to San Bruno for a 9.5-hour interview/work session. It went very well, but I then heard nothing... until over a month later, out of the blue, when he contacted me to invite me out to San Bruno *again* for a longer interview (a week). He seemed to be in a great hurry to make this happen, and kept telling me about the urgency of the hiring decision. However, each time the agreed-upon dates approached, I heard nothing. When I contacted him, he repeatedly rescheduled. Finally, five months after they had told me they had two weeks to make a decision, they came through. I spent a full week in San Bruno - I worked like anyone else on the team - probably harder. Everything seemed to go very well. I was more than qualified for the job - this is an emerging arena into which I was a very early entrant, and I am among the few people worldwide with practical experience. I like my (temporary) coworkers and sensed the feeling was mutual. The only exception to this was a bizarre data management interview conducted by someone far more junior than myself, who was unfamiliar with the software I use for multivariate, inferential statistical analyses (she was clearly frustrated and abruptly ended the interview). When I left, the leader offered profuse praise for my work, and made plans for us to talk the next week (which he then rescheduled numerous times and eventually dropped). I even got an email from a senior manager in Bentonville, expressing his excitement about working with me. Then... six weeks of silence. Ultimately, a friend contacted me to say he'd seen an online posting for the very position for which I had interviewed. I contacted the team leader immediately, to ask about it. About a week later I heard back from a subordinate, as follows: "As of this moment, we don’t feel like you’re the proper fit for the roles that we currently have open. However, we like you a lot and do want to keep in touch. " My feeling was: you have got to be kidding! Although I love this work and was genuinely interested in the position, this is no way to treat anyone -- period. "Careless" and "disrespectful" are the words that come to mind. I also sense that this carelessness and disrespect extends beyond job applicants, to customers and to the fundamental knowledge required to perform effectively and ethically in this field.
