GPGPU is General-Purpose computation on GPU. These days you can program and run general-purpose workloads on GPU hardware (as opposed to only graphics workload) to take advantage of parallel capabilities of this architecture. GPUs execute many threads in groups which are switched whenever each has miss in cache to keep execution going. Each thread uses some registers for its execution. The entire pool of registers allows keeping more threads active to choose from and execute when switching between on misses. Registers use a lot of power, so they are a design consideration.
