What is a context switch and give an example

Interview Answer

1 Answer

A context switch is a computing procedure that is frequently seen in multi-tasking environment. It basically is the process of saving the running process control block (registers, stack,PC,etc) and swapping it with pending running process or task as result of a timer (scheduler) or interrupt handling routine. This way the CPU can run multiple processes or tasks. For example a process starts a file io operation and during the file io the scheduler can preempt the running process and switch it by process doing UI display.
