I interviewed at Workday

Interview

I first had a phone call that was mostly behavioral to talk about the company, the position, and my qualifications. I later went on-site that consisted of 5 interviews. Everyone I talked to was friendly and sincerely seemed to enjoy what they were doing there. It was a laid-back interview process for the most part.

They had a booth at my school's technical career fair. After speaking with someone at the booth, they scheduled an on-campus interview for the next day. Within a few days of the on-campus interview they scheduled me for a day of on-site interviews in the following weeks. Within a few days of the on-site interview they extended an offer. The on-site interview day consisted of a block of 1 on 1 interviews before lunch, and a number of presentations and q/a sessions until 4pm.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Workday (Pleasanton, CA) in Mar 2016

Interview

I was referred by a friend. I had a phone interview with one of the application developers, and then followed up with him with a take-home question. They set up an on-site a week later with 15-20 other candidates (for other positions as well). There were a couple one-on-ones and one-on-twos, mostly behavioral and OOP questions, then a product and technical demo, and last a social with recruiters, managers, and other candidates. Everyone was really friendly there! It was clear that they wanted to see if you would be a good fit for the workplace. The questions that were asked weren't designed to stump you, just to gauge your personality and thinking process. The whole experience was very different from any other company I've interviewed at, and was one of the most pleasant interview experiences I've had.

I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Workday (Pleasanton, CA) in Mar 2016

Interview

Met them at an info session and talked to them at my university's career fair, was asked to schedule an interview at the career fair for the next school day. The on-campus was a 30 minute session mostly about background and one uml design question. Got a response that night about the onsite interview! Scheduled the accommodations and got to pick either next week or the week after for my interview. The onsite was a standard day (only about 3 hours for interviews though). Mostly behavioral, problem solving, previous projects and more design questions. After interviews were over, there were presentations, opportunities to talk to employees and new grad hires (generation workday), all while being fed and given swag and snacks. It ended with a fun social to play games and hangout with the other interviewees. There were shuttles ready to take us to the airport when the social ended. This interview was on a Friday, and I heard back by Tuesday next week. I was really impressed by the promptness of every step of the process (I heard back sooner than expected in every case) as well as the recruiters being really genuine and taking the time to really get to know you and help out as much as possible. What really helped me to decide to choose Workday was that I felt wanted from start to end the entire process, which differs from all my other interview experiences. The people here genuinely seem happy and seem to be taken care of.

Interview Questions
  • UML diagrams - practice modeling any system and describing your design decisions (since there are always many ways to solve a design question).

Difficult Interview
Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Workday (Pleasanton, CA) in Feb 2016

Interview

I was referred to this position from a friend who had just accepted a job offer for this same position so I was contacted by their HR department to schedule a phone interview. The phone interview was with a current developer at Workday and started off asking just basic behavioral type questions and then ended by asking a single technical question about OOP. That was pretty easy. Then I received an email the next day saying that they would like to fly me down and interview at their HQ. A week later I interviewed onsite. It was a full day of interviews and them explaining about their product and the position. Generally for the onsite you will have around 4 hours of interviews and 1 hour of that will be a technical UML design question. I, on the other hand, had in addition to the hour of technical other technical questions about SQL database design, and OOP design.

Interview Questions
  • Draw a UML Diagram about Airlines and show the cardinality between each relationship. Be able to explain in detail why you did what you did and also be expected to expand on your original design.
  • Write code to reverse a string, Now do it again without storing it into any variables. i.e. modify it in place.
  • Assume you have an app that collects user data, draw some SQL tables that you could use to store this data.

I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Workday (Pleasanton, CA) in Feb 2016

Interview

Started with an on-campus interview at my university the day after the career fair. The entire process was very quick and the recruiters were very prompt. Then I was flown out for an on-campus interview at the offices in Pleasanton. The experience was really great and everyone there seemed genuinely happy to work for workday. The interview process was about 3 hours long and mostly behavioral, with one technical round. The technical round focused on OO design and UML modeling. The tone was conversational and the interviewers seemed to encourage a dialogue with them while going through the design process. After the interview there were informational meetings about the job and about workday as well as a social with employees and some of the interviewers.
