    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Zopa (London, England (UK)) in September 2018.

    Interview

Was contacted by the company whilst I was searching for employment as they had seen my CV online. After expressing my interest and arranging a telephone interview, I was then invited to the offices for a further two face-to-face interviews with principal members of the team I would potentially work with. All in all a very streamlined, professional and welcoming experience.

    Senior Software Engineer Interview

    Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Zopa (London, England (UK)) in July 2018.

    Interview

I was contacted by Zopa after publishing my profile on talent.io. The initial call was with an internal recruiter. I had some questions with regards to their development and deployment process as well as technologies they were using which the recruiter could not answer but they scheduled a quick call with one of their developers for me.

When I was satisfied with the answers to my questions they asked me to do a technical assignment. While it was interesting, was in the domain of lending which the company operates in and required doing some research into monthly compound interest I found the requirements to be quite broad, especially when providing a production quality solution which included thorough tests and handling of possible invalid inputs. I was unemployed at the time of working on the assignment but I can see how it could be a big ask for people who are in active employment. I shared my views on the scope of the assignment being too broad in one of the later interviews and they seemed to take that on board.

After submitting the solution to the assignment I was contacted within 5 days to schedule a technical interview with a developer over the phone. I found the interview with the developer to be the low of the whole process. The person interviewing did not provide much of an introduction but just started shooting what at times seemed to be random questions at me. Again, I provided feedback about that at a later stage and it seemed to be taken on board.

After passing the technical phone interview I was invited for a set of onsite interviews. First, I spent 45 minutes with a developer having a conversation about the choices I made for the solution I submitted for the technical assignment and I was also asked to implement a new requirement. Then there was a 45 minute meeting with two people managing projects (one of them would become my line manager if I joined) and I was asked a set of questions around my soft skills. Another 45 minute meeting with two developers followed, but I don't remember the details of what I was asked other than that the questions were technical. I was also allowed to ask questions and remember asking more about the process and technologies used. Finally a 15 minutes meeting with the CTO was scheduled which overrun to almost an hour and I was asked a set of detailed questions around some decisions I made along my professional career and the motivation behind them. The CTO also laid out his vision for the technology side of the business and that meeting felt more like a natural conversation between two sides trying to learn more about each other than a job interview. I'd say that it was a highlight of the whole process.

I was then promptly (within 24 hours) presented with an employment offer which maybe wasn't the highest with regards to the base salary but it was nevertheless competitive. After giving it a thorough consideration I decided to accept another offer I had which felt like a better suited to my personal circumstances at the time as I was coming out of a sabbatical after a burnout.

The process seemed thorough and professional and I'd recommend applying to that company.

    Senior Software Engineer Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Zopa (London, England (UK)) in April 2018.

    Interview

Interview with the recruiter over the phone, followed by a java technical test received via email to be sent back in a week's time.

The test itself wasn't awful, but the marking seemed to be ridiculous to say the least. The test is about finding lenders for a given borrower. They failed me because I just matched one single lender for every borrower, and I did so because nowhere in the requirements said I should do differently. The requirements were vague. Given they also said it should be done in 4 hours, I went for the simplest business solution.

It's a shame the marking is not focusing on the tech skills but in our ability to predict very vague business requirements, for a test that should be done in four hours. I thought this was supposed to be a java technical test not, not one about guessing business requirements.

Maybe there's a "google" syndrome going on and the current developers are biased to make candidates fail just because they want to feel better about themselves. Surely never applying again.

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Zopa (London, England (UK)) in January 2019.

    Interview

    1) Applied online (which was a straightforward & quick process) 2) had an online maths test 3) was invited shortly after to come in for a half day of interviews. On the day itself there were two case study interviews (assessing numerical, conceptual and communication abilities) with minimal questions about my CV/background etc. The following day I received a call and was invited to a final interview with a senior member of staff discussing my motivations and more about the company.

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Zopa (London, England (UK)) in December 2017.

    Interview

30 minute telephone call. Current employee didn't ask me any personal questions, only maths problems. I was asked to compare two different types of lightbulbs and calculate how many I would need, how long they would function etc. Nothing particularly difficult. I took a long time to answer the questions because I didn't want to make a silly mistake but I still got invited to assessment centre. These questions were followed by a fermi problem - my advice is to spend a while on this and explain ALL of your reasoning

Phone conversation with HR person-basic screening. First stage job interview with the manager, second stage with senior member. The interview went well, but I haven't heard from them since. Very poor HR process. Candidates deserve at least a short email with results ...Disrespectful to applicants time and efforts! Shame on you!

    Interview

Applied online. I was happy to receive an email and we scheduled a call for the following day.
I was called on the same day out of the blue from a private number, it was them and since I could hear them (I was in a cafeteria) they hung up.
The following day the scheduled call disappeared and I had no success getting in contact with them again.
    Pretty low quality recruiting process.

    Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Zopa (London, England (UK)) in March 2018.

    Interview

    1. Phone interview to get familiar with each other and explain the process.
    2. Technical test to develop a small application and fulfil requirements.
    3. Technical interview which went well and I was confident of moving forward in the process.

I was rejected because I did not have any Agile experience and did not fit the culture of the company. After I asked if the interviewer left any details on culture fit, he said I did not know how the company made a profit. If Agile experience was a core requirement for the role, this should have been checked in the first phone interview before moving me forward in the process instead of wasting my time and rejecting me later.

    Interview Questions

    • Asked technical questions on my technical test about reusable components, testing components, and scalability of application.
