Why I wanted to become an Editor II.

I missed feeling a sense of accountability and responsibility for a transcript, knowing you’d be the last person to touch it. That said, I was also beginning to feel pressure as a transcriber because I was being forced to hand over jobs without the chance to review them, in order to keep up with the others. What my definition of a job well done was.

I said that in spite of the hard line that I took on the non-negotiability of quality, I’ve had to compromise just to keep up with the team. It would be nice to go back to not caring about speed and just be ever mindful of quality. But since I knew that wouldn’t be very practical, I fell back on the rhetoric of striking a balance between quality and productivity. If that could be achieved, that would be a job well done indeed. Which was more important, quality or productivity.

I said quality was more important. Speed could come later as the transcriber develops ways to work faster, but the point is to do the right thing in a more efficient way, not to submit a messy transcript because tidying it up would take more time than we’d care to spend. Less
