How many hospital beds are in the U.S.? Not that you've estimated it one way, how else could you estimate it?

1 Answer

Assuming the U.S. population is about 300 million people and further assuming that about 10% of those people are sick or hurt at any given time, that gives 30 million people. If we then assume that about one-tenth of those who are sick or hurt typically require hospitalization, then that's 3 million hospital beds in the U.S.. The figure could also be estimated from the average occupancy and vacancy rates of hospitals in the U.S., if we also know the corresponding average number of occupied and vacant beds as well as the number of total number of hospitals.
