"Every business collects data, and it's the job of the data scientist to analyze, interpret, and communicate that information in a way that will help drive company decisions. In an interview, expect to answer technical questions about your ability to perform quantitative tests as well as create clear visualizations of large, complex data sets. Come ready to discuss past projects you've worked on and how you communicate data findings clearly and concisely in order to help solve business-related problems."
I was asked to solve a Kaggle competition - one which was relevant to the Coles' line of business.
The challenged involved constructing a model to predict whether a customer will become a repeat purchaser. The task was time consuming since you were not given any features but had to construct them from a large set of transactions. I learned a lot from the whole process but it was disappointing that after agreeing to get the case study done within a tight time-frame I had to call them 6 weeks later to find out I wasn't successful. I asked for feedback, was told they would get back to me, but once again I have heard nothing from them.
