I answered correctly because I wanted the job. This question is in violation of federal law.

These types of questions are VERY common to be asked by a French company in my experience. Often marital status and children are included on a CV here so they felt it was part of getting to know you. But, I agree, completely offside and out of line to ask, let alone illegal

They would ask how I would handle different situations or conversations with clients.
