What is a Car Salesperson?

A Car Salesperson acts as the liaison between the dealership and the customer during the transaction process of buying a new or used vehicle. A salesperson is responsible for generating trust and long term relationships with the customer while keeping the dealer's interests in mind. Salespersons work for a car dealership. These dealerships can sell new vehicles, used vehicles or both. A good salesperson that writes good numbers can advance to the Sales Manager position.

There is no specific education required to become a Car Salesperson. Almost all dealerships will want candidates to possess a High School Diploma with most preferring some college. A degree in business, Marketing or Sales can be utilized as a Car Salesperson. In addition, a background in any automotive field is a plus. A lot of a Car Salesperson's job is communication with customers and the dealership staff. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are highly desired.

Responsibilities for Car Salesperson

  • Report to morning sales meeting
  • Utilize the marketing department to reach out to new and former customers
  • Intercept customers on the lot and in the sale room to better assist them
  • Offer to tour this years new vehicles and dealership amenities

Qualifications for Car Salesperson

  • Automotive background is a plus
  • 3+ years experience in a sales position
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal ability
  • The drive to excel under pressure
  • Willingness to work holidays and weekends
  • A valid driver's license
