What is a Guidance Counselor?

A Guidance Counselor would be the on-site professional located in a school (middle and high schools, primarily) to be the main resource for students in the areas of career and life coaching. Main activities are to develop appropriate relationships with students and maintain rapport, so students feel comfortable seeking assistance from you. An effective Guidance Counselor will assess the school population and develop a targeted group and individual counseling sessions to reach the specific needs. Maintaining confidentiality and detailed notes are key for an effective Guidance Counselor.

This is a 10 month (September ' June) with working hours Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. ' 3:30 p.m. and is a key player in the school administration. As such collaboration with the Principal and other key leadership is essential to the Guidance Counselors success. g the stress of school would be considered. A Bachelor's degree with a valid state certification as a student Guidance Counselor, is required.

Responsibilities for Guidance Counselor

  • Act as a resource for students in the areas of career and life skills
  • Develop an appropriate rapport with students in supporting them in the area of stress management
  • Provide insight to school leadership on student behavior
  • Partner with school leadership to ensure a safe and emotionally positive school environment
  • Offer daily office hours for student support
  • Schedule career assessments for all students in a timely and orderly manner

Qualifications for Guidance Counselor

  • 2+ years of experience in a school setting
  • Valid state certification as a Guidance Counselor, required
  • Proficiency with a variety of office technology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to develop and maintain appropriate relationships with students
  • Astute counselor with a desire to help students navigate life and school stressors
  • Above-average presentation skills
  • Effectively partner with school leadership
  • Provide guidance to students on developing and reaching career goals _
