Licensed vocational nurses are responsible for monitoring patients' vital signs, including their blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, height, and weight. Additionally, LVN's are responsible for administering enemas, recording intake and output of foods and fluids, and collecting samples for testing. A licensed vocational nurse administers and documents medication under a physician�s order. Licensed vocational nurses usually work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and physician offices.

Licensed practical nurses generally have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing along with a valid license practical nursing certification. A successful licensed vocational nurse is a compassionate team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities for Licensed Vocational Nurse

  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors
  • Participate in daily controlled substance count
  • Sterilize packages and autoclaves instruments, using proper sterilization protocols
  • Effectively label and process patient specimens as needed, including tracking specimens in appropriate logs
  • Communicate with patients� family or friends to provide advice, comfort and release instructions
  • Effectively carry out medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures
  • Administer injections, prescribed medications and clean and dress wounds and assist with other basic medical care tasks
  • Demonstrate appropriate hand washing technique to ensure proper infection control and follows universal precautions

Qualifications for Licensed Vocational Nurse

  • 2+ years� nursing experience
  • Valid CPR certification
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care according to individual needs
  • Outstanding knowledge of medical terminology
  • Current LPN license in the state
  • Excellent staff training and customer service skills
  • Exceptional physical condition and stamina
  • Deep understanding of confidentiality obligations and nursing best practices
