Program assistants work in a variety of different industries with the main focus of carrying out administrative tasks that impact the daily operations of a business. Most program assistants are responsible for performing general office duties such as answering phone calls, keeping records, data entry, addressing customer concerns and so on. Additional responsibilities depend on the organization and industry. Depending on the internal organizational structure of the company, program assistants may progress to become program managers or executive assistants.
A high school diploma or general education diploma is often required to become a program assistant with most companies expressing a preference for prior working experience in the same position in a related field. Strong communication skills are a must as this position requires negotiations with clients, customers and in-house personnel. Other valuable skills include multitasking, time-management abilities and strong attention to detail.
