I worked at American Cancer Society full-time
The Mission. The dedicated and passionate staff and volunteers you get the opportunity to work with are amazing. The cancer patients and their loved ones you serve are inspiring, The benefits are good. Brand recognition is good.
The public is unaware of all the American Cancer Society does creating barriers for fundraising. Non-profits rely on donations and over the past 100 years the cancer groups have grown enormously leading to fierce competition for donor dollars. All The American Cancer Society has done and does needs to be showcased. The focus has shifted to fundraising, as is needed, placing lots of pressure on the development side of the house. And unfortunately mission staff and community collaborators are left feeling under appreciated, if not resentful leading to some overall team spirit, enthusiasm issues as well as creating barriers for collaboration.
Advice to Management
There needs to be exit interviews/ surveys for all leaving the organization administered and analyzed by corporate. There is much to gleaned from this input. The American Cancer Society has been doing great things for over 100 years. The general public, including volunteers need to be enlightened.
