I worked at Auto Truck Transport full-time (More than 5 years)
Union employee's (Driver, Shop, Shuttler, Dispatchers, Terminal Clerks) benefits and pay are exceptional, free pension AND medical, dental and vision coverage. Driver's get paid for almost ALL downtime and ALL OTR expenses are covered by the Company. Terminals are poorly managed allowing for excessive OT & Double time, which is a pro for you if you work in the shop, Drivers can use whatever is left of your 14 hour day on downtime for whatever reason as long as it is logged correctly and a pay item in the contract (wrecker, dealer, breakdown, weather, light bar repair, waiting on customs paperwork, keys to be made, etc.etc.etc---DELAYS ALL COVERED under the contract), with no accountability when you are caught falsifying your delay pay...again, a pro for you the driver.
Where to start... Lack of leadership - Executive Management is replaced about every 4 years (ED CUMBO LEFT ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO), most recent group was inherited from Allied after they ran it into bankruptcy to be eventually bought out by Jack Cooper, Local Terminal Management are puppets with NO accountability, Driver Managers do not answer or return calls nor do they offer any assistance when they do, just pass the buck and have you make more phone calls and wait on someone else to make a decision, but hey, while waiting on the incompetency of others, you're probably getting paid. Non-Union workers have low salaries, like 10-15,000 LOWER than other companies which probably explains why most don't even show up for work, especially in Texas, no advancement from within, no training, terrible and expensive insurance coverage Terrible loads- 4 trucks in a load with 200-600 mile splits in between the 3-4 stops you will have to make within bankers hours most of the time and that is if you got lucky and got a load with at least 1500 miles. The UNION Stewards are terrible and don't fight for you unless they like you, not because they believe in your argument, they have offices in the terminal and get paid ALOT more than the rest of us with no real representation. They are appointed by the IAM and NOT VOTED IN as they should be.
Advice to Management
Pack up and leave before you run this company into bankruptcy too.
