    I worked at Baltimore City Public School System full-time (More than 8 years)


    The students are the joy of any teaching job. Yes, they can have behavioral issues but at the core, they are beautiful, kind, angels that just require guidance. They are the reason any teacher continues to go to work. If you're at a great school (or not), you will often encounter some great coworkers. There are many opportunities for teachers to earn higher salaries now and the JGP/BTU gives you tons of information for advancement opportunities.


    The system is a MESS! I know that's vague but I would need days to explain it. There are so many gaps and flaws in the system that make working there very difficult. I worked at 4 schools within 9 years, under 6 principals and the key is to find a school were your administration is responsive, organized and supportive. I only found that at two schools. One, I had to leave because of funding. The second, was the last school I worked at and it was phenomenal. It's all about leadership! The system itself operates in a culture of fear and condemnation, blaming teachers and giving them the burden of any issues presented in or outside the classroom BUT again, there are gems inside the school system that can successfully shield their schools from that horrendous culture.

    Advice to Management

    Stop condemning teachers and start celebrating them! Support teachers in their efforts to grow learners and grow themselves. DO NOT blame teachers for poor behavior/behavior management. Actively support them in the classroom. Instead of sending "THE NETWORK" to point out and report what people are doing wrong, send them to HELP and MENTOR teachers. Let them be aids in the classroom, demonstrate instruction and classroom management, help with creating better management and instructional plans...Instead of just pointing fingers and draining the system of finances. Systemic Professional Development needs to be much better. Stop sending Special Educators to pick a grade...OFFER PD for SPECIAL EDUCATION TOPICS. For instance, offer Orton Gillingham training for those working with students that have learning disabilities. It's a proven system that could be used to teach children to read. I could go on for days, but start there!
